Some dogs are fortunate to be in the right home and family; others, not so much. Just think about the dogs you come across in the streets. They have to sniff their way around places to find food and shelter.
At least, they don’t have a leash and can still fend for themselves. Others have it worse.
While approaching a destination, a group of firefighters in Sacramento spotted a poor dog leashed on a tree and was left practically unprotected from the shivering rain.
One firefighter, in particular, Mike Thawley, is a loyal dog lover. Seeing one trapped by leash and riddled with mange, it devasted Mike.
He decided to bring the dog with them to the firehouse where she can warm up and rest. They named the dog Chunk or Chunkie.
After duty, the firefighter crew arrived to see the dog already bathed and wrapped in blankets. Collectively, they agreed to send her to a shelter and hoped for the best for her.
Thawley took Chunkie to the Front Street Animal Shelter himself, but he wasn’t ready to bid his final goodbye. After leaving, the firefighter, having a soft spot for Pit bulls, couldn’t stop thinking about the dog he rescued.
With his wife and daughters’ permission, he decided that he will change Chunkie’s life forever.
At a glance, Thawley noticed that Chunkie was lonely in a cage. So, when he made his entrance, the dog practically leaped for joy even if her skin hurt. She recognized her savior and was happy to see him.
Before Chunkie’s official adoption, she had to finish her 4-month mange treatment. Then, the big day finally came when she went home with Thawley and met his family.
The Thawleys were very kind to Chunkie and were glad to have her as a part of their family. Chunkie is blessed to have her newfound humans. But countless other dogs need help.
So, if you can’t afford to care for your dogs or other pets anymore, it’s better to leave them at a shelter so they can have a chance to have a new family and life.
Don’t leave them as if they’re trash because they have feelings too, and their lives are not less than humans’.
Kudos to Mike Thawley and his family. Without them, Chunkie would still be suffering. Hopefully, she’ll enjoy the rest of her life with them.
