Bill and Andrea Gaylord had only minutes to evacuate their property in the town of Paradies. A gigantic wildfire was spreading fast, and their home was about to be engulfed by flames.
The elderly couple called out to their Anatolian Shepherd dogs, Madison and Miguel, but they refused to get in the car. They even kept running around, confused at what was happening. Although they didn’t want to leave their pets, the couple had no choice but to get in their car and speed off. Somehow, Bill was confident that they would be able to run away on their own.
Worried and anxious pet owners
Like Bill and Andrea, there were a lot of families that were forced to leave their pets behind. After the fires ravaged their town, many were anxious to go back and find their pets. But the authorities sealed off the area, and no one can go back in.
However, some volunteers from pet rescue organizations were given the authorization to go in and look for animals that survived. One of them is Shayla Sullivan from K9 Paw Print Rescue. she got in touch with Bill and Andrea and promised to check on their two dogs.
Shayla went to their address, and all she saw was the burned-down remains of their home. Nevertheless, she left some food and water, hoping that the dogs could find them and feed themselves. For several days, she regularly went back and did the same thing.
In the meantime, Andrea kept posting pictures of their dogs online. After a while, someone got in touch with her and said that one of her dogs was in a shelter in Sacramento, 90 miles away. It was Miguel.
He was soon taken back to his family.
Loyal dog
A month after the wildfire swept through their community, the residents were finally allowed to go back in. When the senior couple got to their house, they got the biggest surprise of their life. Sitting in the charred remains of their home was Madison.
The dog never lost hope that his humans would come back for him. He patiently waited and protected their property. The family is whole again and is starting to rebuild their lives.
